A One-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship, History and Epistemology of Psychiatric Epidemiology (CESAMES/CERMES3)
The Centre de Recherche Médecine, Sciences, Santé, Santé Mentale et Société (CERMES3) announces a one-year post-doctoral fellowship, starting on September 15th, 2010, attached to the project “History and Epistemology of Psychiatric Epidemiology”, coordinated by Anne M. Lovell (Paris Descartes University, Senior Research Fellow, INSERM).
Candidates may propose a subject relevant to the interdisciplinary understanding of the emergence of psychiatric epidemiology, nosology and ideas of “the mental”, and the social-historical contexts and scientific transformations within which this disciplin developed. An interest in conducting oral history interviews of major historical and contemporary figures in modern psychiatric epidemiology would be an advantage. The candidate will participate in the preparation of a volume edited by Dr. Lovell on this topic, and participate and assist in the organization of the CERMES3 “Philosophy, History, and Sociology of Mental Medicine” seminars. During his or her tenure, the post-doctoral fellow will make at least one oral presentation in the seminar “History and Epistemology of Psychiatric Epidemiology”.
Applicants should have a completed doctorate in one of the social sciences before the start of the fellowship. Non-social scientists may apply if they have a Master-Level background in a relevant social science or philosophy of science. The possibility of enrolling in epidemiological courses at local medical schools or public health institutes will be explored for those with little knowledge of the common principles and language of epidemiology.
All applicants must have good reading and oral mastery of French and English. They should also have an adequate enough background in quantitative skills to be able to interpret psychiatric epidemiology literature.
Applications (in French or English) should include a letter indicating reasons for running for post-doctoral fellowship, a summary and 5 pages or less description of the research project, a curriculum vitae (educational and training experiences, work history and relevant skills, honors/awards, publications citations), one sample of the candidate best analytical writing, and names and contact information for three references familiar with the candidate’s work.
Please submit materials (and for more information) by December 15th, 2009 to A. M. Lovell
